How common is "Success" when having AU coins graded?

I have read several posts here about purchasing AU or BU pre-1933 gold coins (say from Apmex), then sending them off for grading to receive a MS-60-63 rating.
How common is this type of "Success" when having AU or BU coins graded?

Also, what is the typical cost involved in sending a coin off for grading & slabbing.

Thanks, Bill.

you have to join.
if you join ngc for a year's membership they give you 5 free grades but the membership is $100 so your first 5 will cost $100.

if the AU/BU coins turn out to be cleaned or tampered with you just lost $100 and you dont get your coins graded.

Based on my experience.....it will end up costing you between $20 - $25 per coin by the time you pay for grading, outgoing and return shipping cost.

I have had a better luck with Apmex than gainesvillecoins.com - some of the gainesville coins came back as cleaned. My apmex coins usually grade between AU53 and MS60.....on the pre 1933 stuff. I send to Anacs also...as they will grade cleaned coins and just not it on the capsule. I like to have all of my pre 1933 coins graded just for the authentication part of it....it shows they are real if I ever had to sell them....but everyone is different. Ebay allows certified coins to be referenced as graded if they are from four of the major grading services..and ANACS is on the list....although I do use NGC more than Anacs...I have been satisfied with both...but if I have any reason to think the coins have been cleaned - I do not send them to NGC as it a waste of money..on cleaned or damaged coins.

I used to be able to buy pre 1933 coins for less than 3% over spot..but those opportunities went away about a year ago! Now the premiums are alot higher.

Word to the wise.......

If you desire a graded coin..... BUY IT LIKE THAT.

You NEVER get the premium back and the legwork you put into grading the coin when you decide to sell ...it is a losing propersition.

It is too subjective.
